The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today that wages in New Jersey rose in the first quarter of the year, with an average weekly wage increase of $2.5 an hour. Nearly three-quarters (251) said average weekly wages were above the national average, and nearly half (52%) of them said weekly wages had risen by more than $1,000.

Morris County saw the largest increase, with a 3.9 percent increase, followed by Middlesex County (2.8 percent) and Bergen County, New Jersey (1.7 percent). Hudson County's (-3.1 percent), was the second-largest increase in the state, behind only New York City. All six counties had an average weekly wage increase of at least $1,000, led by the three largest increases in Morris County: $2,500, $3,300 and $4,400.

Hunterdon was the only small district to report an average weekly wage increase of less than $1,000, or 1.5 percent. Hunterdon ($1,273) was also the smallest borough in New Jersey, with a median wage of $2,073, and was one of only a handful of counties in the state with more than a million residents that saw an average annual wage decline of at least $3,500.

Mercer County (0.4 percent), by contrast, suffered an annual loss and ranked 314th nationally. Ocean County had the second-largest annual wage decline in New Jersey (1.5 percent), ranked 288th nationally and the third-largest in the state.

The lowest weekly wages were paid in Cameron and Hidalgo counties in Texas, followed by Horry, S.C., at $674. Shawnee, Kan., and Caddo, La., had the largest annual wage declines in New Jersey (0.5 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively), but both are at the southern tip of the state.
